How to Clean Leather

If you are unsure what may happen when learning how to clean leather, it may be a good idea to start with leather that you would not mind disposing of. The first thing that you should do when learning how to clean leather is carefully examine and note any pre-existing problems with the leather before you start. An example of these problems would be scuffs, stains, wrinkles, etc. The next thing you should do when learning how to clean leather is to figure out how the leather has been conditioned or if it has been coated with a chemical to seal it from absorbing water. When you are learning how to clean leather you also want to make sure that you have all the appropriate tools for cleaning before you start. A few examples of these are saddle soaps, conditioners, rags, sponges and leather finish. When cleaning leather make sure you use all the tools and chemicals according to the instructions listed on the containers. A lot of these chemicals smell horrible or can make you sick if ingested. Make sure you use common sense when learning how to clean leather and do the cleaning in steps and layers. First make sure dirt and soil is cleaned off. Then you use all purpose leather cleaner, then saddle soap. Finally when these have dried apply leather conditioner and leather protector. Make sure you are using the appropriate chemicals and soaps for the type of leather you are cleaning. Using the wrong chemicals could result in the permanent destruction of the leather. Finally, before you even start cleaning the leather make sure you understand what you are doing. Always think ahead, and do not be too rough with the leather. Often time people who really love leather will clean and condition their items before they are ever used for the first time.
