Saratoga, New York sits around the central eastern part of the state of New York. The name of the city was taken from an Indian word believed to mean “side hill” or “hillside of a great river”. The Indians, namely the Iroquois, first controlled the land until settlers and colonists began to take over. Prior to 1786, Saratoga County was actually Albany County. Apparently Albany County was a very big county and before that time had been split up to create other counties as well.
Saratoga, New York is famous due to its part in the United States’ Revolutionary War. In the year of 1777, the Battle of Saratoga proved to the British and the French that the American armies were not an army to be taken lightly and was a force to be reckoned with. This fight for freedom proved to the French that the Americans meant to stand firm in their belief for freedom. It also proved to the British that the Americans would not be so easily won over.
In this battle, the British swept through the American armies but thanks to the overwhelming numbers and skills of the American soldiers, the British suffered man losses and barely claimed a victory. However, now the British army was trapped. With nowhere to run, the General of the British army had no choice but to retreat or to attack again. It was with this second attack, lead in most part, by Benedict Arnold that lead to the victory over the British.
Suffering over 1,000 losses of officers and men, the General of the British army retreated overnight. The American troops suffered losses just under 500. As the British fled, they were met by a new army of Americans of over 20,000 men. With nowhere to run, the General surrendered. Under the terms of the Americans, the British were given great honors of war and the weapons were relinquished to the Americans.
Saratoga. New York was one of many counties that found their way into the railroad industry. It has a history of various railroad companies that were based in cities located inside the county. Out of its famous history, it is known that the American Bar Association was organized in Sarasota County, New York, in August of 1878. The entire county has prospered over the years and continues to grow today.
As of they year 2000, the population of Saratoga, New York, was just over 200,000 citizens. Many of its cities now have popular historical tourist destinations, including the history of the railroad, Indian culture, and the Battle of Saratoga. Hotels have claimed to have registration books signed by Andrew Jackson, Washington Irving, and many more famous men in history.
