What Are Vacuum Cleaner Brush Rollers?

Vacuum cleaner brush rollers are revolving brushes strategically positioned to provide agitation to the nap of the carpet during the vacuuming process. Essentially, the rollers move the carpet fibers around making it possible for the suction of the vacuum to easily pick up tiny particles of dirt that otherwise would be left embedded in the carpeting. Both canister style vacuums as well as upright vacuum cleaners utilize brush rollers to enhance the efficiency.

Sometimes referred to as a brush roll, the body of vacuum cleaner brush rollers normally is cylindrical in shape, and features rows of bristles around the body of the device. Beater bars are also a common design element with a roller. In combination with the bristles, the beater bar helps to effectively move carpet fibers about and allow the power of the suction to reach between the fibers and dislodge even ground in dirt with greater ease.

As with most components on a vacuum cleaner, it is important to take care of the vacuum cleaner brush rollers in order to maintain the highest degree of efficiency. Since the rollers come into direct contact with the surface of the carpeting, it is very easy for thin fibers to get caught in the bristles and wrap around the body of the rollers. If these fibers are not removed from the roller from time to time, they will effectively slow the action of the device, placing a greater strain on the motor of the vacuum. As a result, the vacuum will provide a sub-par cleaning action and the motor will wear out much quicker than if the rollers were periodically cleaned.

Cleaning strings and other debris from vacuum cleaner brush rollers is not a complicated task. With an upright vacuum, the process takes no more than a few minutes. After making sure the device is not plugged into an outlet, flip the cleaner over so you can look at the rollers. If there is a buildup of debris attached to the bristles and wrapped around the body of the roller, remove the safety plate and extract the roller. Specific instructions on how to do this are found in the instruction manual that came with the vacuum cleaner.

Once the roller is extracted, begin removing any strings or other foreign matter from the body and bristles. Since the body of most vacuum cleaner brush rollers today are made with heavy duty metal, you do not necessarily need to be gentle as you clean the bristles. If necessary, use scissors to cut sections of any strings or other fibers that are wrapped around the body and firmly embedded in the bristles. Before returning the roller to its position in the vacuum, check the chamber around the roller for any built up dirt or collection of hair or other fiber. Also take a moment and inspect the belt that drives the rotation of the roller. Loose or worn belts will greatly impact the efficiency of all vacuum cleaner brush rollers and ultimately cause damage to the motor.

When you purchase replacement vacuum cleaner brush rollers, make sure to only buy units compatible with your brand of vacuum cleaner. If you are not sure what to purchase, detach your old roller and take it along. This will make it easier for the sales associate to help you choose the right roller for your machine.
