What are Allergen Filters?Allergen filters have become a necessary part of everyday life for many people around the globe. Allergen filters remove volatile particulates from the air that cause problems for those people with respiratory problems such as asthma. There are so many different types of allergen filters that it’s difficult to describe them all, but there are a few players in the allergen filter market that stand out as giants in the industry. Allergen filters are used in hospitals, retirement communities, and private residences. They can drastically improve indoor air quality and help prevent respiratory problems associated with airborne contaminants such as: cigar or cigarette smoke, pet dander, pollen and dust. These units help prevent asthma attacks and can improve the quality of life for those who suffer from terrible allergies. Activated carbon filters are wildly popular, mainly because they are cost-effective and excellent at filtering out particulate matter by absorption. They work by changing and absorbing airborne particulates on the atomic level. The problem with using activated carbon filters is that, because they absorb particulates, they quickly reach a point where they’re at their equilibrium phase, meaning they can absorb no more. At that point, they must be cleaned or replaced. Ionized Air Purifiers are becoming increasingly popular, thanks to successful models that have been brought to market by makers such as Oreck, The Sharper Image, and EcoQuest. These filters work not by absorbing any material, but by creating electrically charged atoms that are released into the room and attach themselves to particulates in the air. The particulates are then attracted to a collection grid within the filter trapping the particles. These types of filters use very little electricity, and generally have no moving parts. They do an excellent job of cleaning the air, but have a difficult time moving a large volume of air, so it can take hours or days to notice results. Ionized air purifiers can be broken down into two primary categories, air and liquid. The main difference being that liquid ionized air purifiers use tiny particles of charged water that attach and attract particulates whereas the air purifier uses ions within the air to attach to particles. Photocatalytic Oxidation filters are the latest offering on the market, and show promising results. Based partly upon the ultraviolet sterilization lamps used in hospitals and other institutions, these devices use short-wavelength ultraviolet light to oxidize and remove volatile particulates from the air. This process results in cleaner air, and can work very quickly. Unfortunately, because these devices are the newcomers in the field of air purification, they remain very expensive and difficult to install. Typically, units are used in industrial applications, mainly because of their size and expense. Also, because they can neither move air efficiently by themselves, nor dispose of the oxidized particulates, they are typically coupled with fans to move air, and traditional filters to trap particulates. Some units are installed on HVAC and air-conditioning units to improve efficiency. More Vacuum Products |
