Sanitaire Vacuum Cleaners

Sanitaire vacuum cleaners date back to the 1950s when the first of their line was released to the general public. At this time they were known as Sanitaire heavy duty vacuum cleaners, because they were generally purchased and used by commercial businesses to clean high traffic areas. Later the company began focusing on lighter weight models for use in homes and offices.

Sanitaire was purchased by Eureka and became a subsidiary of the larger vacuum cleaner manufacturer, which corresponded with their change to home use. However, dealers who sold the Sanitaire vacuum cleaners wanted to purchase them for commercial uses. They contacted the company frequently and to meet the pressure from their dealers, Eureka began releasing products under the Red Sanitaire Line.

Unfortunately the first few years this line was operational were rough on the company. Independent cleaners had their own products they liked and used and many were unwilling to try something new. These cleaners typically had control of the cleaning of commercial businesses and institutions. To increase sales and attract new customers, Eureka began touting the benefits of using the Sanitaire vacuum cleaners.

They pushed the strong performance of the machines and pointed out they contained powerful engines to make cleaning even easier. They also showed how durable the vacuums were, and used this as a way to help customers save money. By purchasing one of their vacuums, cleaning crews could save money in the long run because they wouldn’t need to buy a new vacuum for several years.

Eureka also began making changes to the Sanitaire vacuum cleaners. They changed to a canister system that didn’t rely on bags, and they used a filtration system to reduce the debris put out by the vacuum cleaner. They also showed customers easy ways to maintain their vacuums, which reduced the costs of having the vacuums serviced. Additionally, they made it easier for customers to change parts in the vacuum in the event of a problem. The durability of the Sanitaire vacuum cleaners has never been questioned, and there are some original models still functioning today. Electrolux purchased Eureka in 1974 and they continue to release some models under the Sanitaire line today.

Throughout the history of the company, Sanitaire has made some important changes to their vacuum cleaners. For example, in 1976 they added a chrome steel brush roll to their vacuums for increased durability. A few years later they eliminated bags in all their Sanitaire vacuum cleaners by switching to a dirt cup. This cup held the dirt and debris until the user emptied it.

They also made several changes in the 1980s including improvements to their fan chamber and a new filtration system. They added HEPA filtration to their models released during the 2000s and broadened into other areas of house cleaning. In 2006, they released a series of vacuums designed for contractors and those working on construction sites. The following year they released a line of entirely green products for cleaning. That same year, they also released their newest model, the DuraLux Upright with two motors for more powerful cleaning.
