How to Repair a Broken Vacuum Belt
A broken vacuum belt is one of the most common things that needs repair in vacuum cleaners, regardless of whether they are canister or upright models. The vacuum drive belt is powered by the motor and attached to the beater bar via a motor drive shaft. This beater bar typically consists of a spinning brush which agitates the carpet in order to loosen debris to be sucked up by the vacuum. Because the vacuum belt basically "powers" this brush, it is often the first part to wear out. With a little time and a few simple household tools, you can fix the broken vacuum belt yourself.
The First Step
Take note of your vacuum's make and model number to ensure you get the right belt. As a precautionary measure, remove the broken vacuum cleaner belt, and take it with you when shopping for a replacement. You will need a screwdriver and possibly a sharp knife.
The Repair Work
Most beater bars slide into slots built into both ends of the vacuum assembly. On one or both ends of the beater bar is a round-shaped drum on which the driver belt is installed, with one end on the drum and the other on the motor drive shaft. You should be able to see whether the belt is broken, stretched out or missing altogether.
First always unplug the vacuum before attempting any repair work, to avoid a harmful shock or injury. Next, turn over the vacuum assembly which contains the beater bar and vacuum driver belt, and you will notice a cover held in place by tabs or screws. With the tabs, you might have to press in or squeeze them in order to pop off the cover. Most vacuum cleaner models, however, have flat head or Phillips head screws holding the covers in place. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws and take off the cover to expose the full beater bar and drive belt assembly. Diagnosing the problem is usually the first step in repairing a broken vacuum cleaner belt. If your vacuum is not picking up as much debris or you notice the beater bar is not turning when the motor is engaged, your drive belt is likely broken. You will find replacement belts from your vacuum cleaner dealer or even at your local hardware store for just a few dollars.
