How to Keep Your Vacuum Cleaner Running Like New
The vacuum cleaner is one of the most important appliances in any home, as it helps to remove: dirt, dust, allergens, and pet hair. People depend on the vacuum cleaner so much that they often take it for granted. Many don't realize in order to keep the vacuum working like new; they need to take care of it. Neglecting the care of the vacuum cleaner can prevent it from doing the job it is designed to do.
One way to keep the vacuum cleaner running in tip-top shape is to change the vacuum bag when it is torn or half-full. This involves checking the bag each time the vacuum is used. Bags that are clean and in good condition keep dust particles from blowing into the air. If you own a bagless vacuum, the dust compartment should be emptied each time the vacuum is used.
People can maintain a vacuum cleaner by remembering to change the vacuum belt every three months to a year. The brush roll will not work properly if the belt is worn or loose. If a vacuum has a sprocket belt, the belt is manufactured from stronger material and can be changed every one to two years, depending on usage.
Another way to maintain the life of a vacuum cleaner is to regularly change its filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. If a filter is clogged, the vacuum will have difficulty cleaning carpets. High-efficiency filters or bags are ideal for cleaning jobs that involve removing fine dust.
Regularly check the condition of the vacuum's brushes as well. Brush rolls can trap strings and other debris which interfere with the function of the appliance. Grime and dirt can also be trapped in the vacuum's bearings, interfering with the brushes' movement: trapped dirt can also strain the motor.
A vacuum cord or plug that is damaged should be taken to a repair shop immediately or if you notice a burning smell when using the appliance. Clean the vacuum's exterior with a damp cloth: the vacuum's attachments can be cleaned with soap and water.
When vacuuming a floor, do not try to vacuum large objects or anything made of metal as this can break the motor or fan assembly. Wet mats or carpets should never be vacuumed since this can create a dangerous electric shock. Mold and bacteria can breed inside the vacuum bag or hose if wet objects are vacuumed into the appliance.
Finally, to maintain a vacuum cleaner, take it to be serviced every one or two years. Vacuum cleaners can be expensive, so it's prudent to protect your investment by having a professional give it a tune-up. Check the user’s manual to learn about the specific needs of your particular vacuum cleaner model. Follow these tips, and you'll keep that vacuum cleaner running as efficiently as the day you first took it out of the box.
