Hoover Vacuum Cleaners
The Hoover Company began in North Canton, Ohio, where they sold electric vacuum cleaners. They now have a second base of operations in the United Kingdom that’s kept separate from the United States company. The U.S. base was sold to Techtronic Industries in 2006, but the U.K. base is owned by Candy Company, out of Italy. The two different branches of Hoover separated in 1993.
Hoover vacuum cleaners first began operations in 1907. James Murray Spangler was a janitor who invented things in his spare time. He also had asthma and decided to create a vacuum cleaner that would clean up more dust and not spread it around his house. He took apart his vacuum cleaner to use as a model and created one of his own. The Electric Suction Sweeper was the end result and after seeking out a patent, he set about building them in his own house.
Spangler’s cousin used one of his vacuums and told her boss, W.H. Hoover, about the machine. Hoover created leather, but saw the potential in the design and purchased the patent. He hired Spangler, who created more designs for the company until he eventually died. Hoover advertised his vacuum cleaners in the Saturday Evening Post, where he promised shoppers that they could use the vacuum for ten days free of charge. This led to the Hoover vacuum cleaners becoming a hit.
In 1926, all Hoover vacuums cleaners became equipped with a beater bar that hit the floor hard enough to get up hidden dirt. A few years later, the vacuums came complete with a Hoover Hedlite that helped when cleaning darker areas. The Convertible released in 1957 was one of their more popular models. This featured additional tools that plugged into the back of the vacuum, and a switch to increase the speed and suction. It was such a hit that it was sold continuously for nearly forty years.
The Dial-A-Matic, released in 1963, was the first upright container vacuum that also improved air quality by sending the dirt into the bag and expelling clean air. The design was so popular that dozens of other manufacturers copied the idea for themselves. They also released the Powerdrive feature a few years later that allowed the vacuum to move in different directions.
There were a few other popular Hoover vacuum cleaners over the years, like The Portable. This was a canister cleaner that stored all the attachments inside the canister and was lightweight enough to carry easily. There was also the Swingette that could be carried over the arm and used to clean hard to reach areas. Hoover also released the Slimline, a thinner and lighter weight model that was sold for nearly a decade.
The Hoover Company went public in the 1940s when the family decided to sell some of their shares. It was acquired in 1985 by the Chicago Pacific Corporation, which was bought out in 1989 by Maytag. Maytag was purchased by Whirlpool in 2006, and a year later the company sold Hoover to Techtronic Industries. That same year they decided to close the North Canton manufacturing center.
