Should You Get a Canister or Upright Vacuum Cleaner?

In the past, it was not difficult to choose between canister and upright vacuum cleaners, because they both had their distinctive advantages. Those who needed a vacuum cleaner for hard surfaces would choose a canister vacuum cleaner, while an upright vacuum cleaner was more suitable for carpeted surfaces. Today, with the advancement of technology, both types of vacuum cleaners became more versatile, and they could work well on a wider variety of surfaces. There are, however, still some differences between a canister and an upright vacuum cleaner that you should know before deciding which one to buy.

Nowadays, the choice between canister and upright vacuum cleaners is mostly a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer an upright vacuum cleaner because it allows them to exercise more control when vacuuming. The entire device is in front of them, and they can easily direct it to spots that need cleaning. On the other hand, a canister vacuum cleaner does not allow such freedom of movement because the canister is located behind you, and it has to be pulled along during cleaning, which some people consider quite a hassle.

Another reason why people choose upright vacuum cleaners is because they usually come with larger vacuum cleaner bags, and do not need changing so often. The modern upright vacuum cleaners come with new features such as: dirt sensors, self-propelled motors, height adjustment, wider cleaning paths, on/off brush rolls, and tool options to make them more suitable for hard surfaces. Generally, upright vacuum cleaners are usually more affordable than canister vacuum cleaners.

The newer canister vacuum cleaners come with a lightweight head, which makes it easier to push them around when cleaning. Although upright vacuum cleaners give better control, more strength has to be expended when using them. Canister vacuum cleaners make it possible to clean areas around and under furniture, which is difficult or even impossible with upright vacuum cleaners. The wide range of tools that comes with canister vacuum cleaners make them very effective for cleaning stairs and other special surfaces. Now, canister vacuum cleaners also have more suction power, and they have become more effective on carpeted surfaces.

Those who are suffering from allergies also prefer canister vacuum cleaners because they come with HEPA sealed systems that will get rid of the microscopic allergens in your environment. Vacuum cleaners that do not have HEPA sealed systems are not able to trap the allergens completely, and will just stir them up into the air you breathe. Canister vacuum cleaners are also known to be less noisy, and therefore, will give you a more relaxing cleaning experience.

Before you decide whether you want to purchase an upright or canister vacuum cleaner, consider the floor surface, the size of your rooms, the placement of furniture, the attachments required and other aspects of the place where you will be using the vacuum cleaner to help you decide which vacuum cleaner type is best for you.
