What is the Best Upright Bagless Vacuum?

Bagless vacuum cleaners have become popular in the last few years as an alternative to vacuums requiring expensive and sometimes hard-to-find bags. Many claim strong, powerful suction with no loss of power as the filters become clogged like traditional vacuums. Criteria for the best choice includes high amps, excellent filtration, attachments, cleaning tools and extensions, easy propulsion, a long cord, and wall-edging.

The vacuum cleaner that best fits this description is the Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Animal Absolute Upright Vacuum Cleaner. Consumer reviews are overwhelmingly positive.

Some of the most ardent supporters were pet owners and people with allergies. The ability of this vacuum to remove pet hair from carpeting is unequalled. Hair ends up in the collector and not wound around the rollers, and fine dust is captured, not expelled back into the air.

The vacuum features the best suction on the market even compared to other Dyson models, slick design, and excellent engineering. The lifetime HEPA filter is also a plus in comparison to pricey disposable filters. It needs to be removed, washed, and dried for a full 24 hours, preferably near a heat source, whenever necessary. The full range of tools, extra-long heavy-duty cord, and long, flexible suction tube give added reach for use on drapes, walls, and stairs. The brush can be turned off for use on hard flooring. The dust container is the easiest on the market to remove and replace. The five-year warranty answers concerns of whether the Dyson will hold up long enough to be worth the price tag.

Negative criticism includes weight—20 pounds—and poorly written instructions. Some people mentioned that maintaining that famous suction requires regular maintenance, such as cleaning out the cones and replacing the belts. Also cited was the powerful brush action being very hard on carpets. Despite these issues, the pros outweighed the cons by a huge margin.

A less expensive vacuum that also did exceptionally well in testing and reviews is the Kenmore Progressive 36932 (average price: $350.00). This bagless vacuum performs as well or better than pricier Dyson models on bare floors, carpets, and rugs. One thing to consider is that it is not self-propelled and while its twenty pound weight is helped along by the bar rotation, it is bulky and difficult to manipulate. The Inteli-clean system dirt sensor is a unique feature, with colored lights to indicate how dirty the carpet is. The true HEPA filter is replaceable at a cost of about $20.00, which may make this vacuum cost more over the life of the unit. Like the Dyson vacuum, the powerful brush rotation of the Kenmore will chew up carpets if left in one place or used carelessly.

The Kenmore also features a long cord, onboard tools, and a container that is easy and convenient to empty. Plus, users cited that it is simple to assemble.

Each of these vacuums is praised for the ability to remove dirt, dust, and hair from carpets previously assumed to be clean. In style, quality, and performance, both performed exceptionally well. The cost difference is offset by the need to replace HEPA filters in the Kenmore model.
